Hui No Ke Ola Pono gets Weinberg grant
WAILUKU - Hui No Ke Ola Pono received a $10,000 "Christmas in July" grant from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
The money will be used for the nonprofit agency's health education programs for low-income people on Maui.
Hui No Ke Ola Pono is a private, nonprofit, community-based health-enhancement and disease-prevention center. One of five Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems created under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Act of 1988, the agency provides services in a culturally caring, sensitive and appropriate manner that reflects Hawaiian values.

Hypnosis and magic show to aid veterans
WAILUKU - Hypnotist Frank Franali and magician Kolina will perform at a benefit for the American Veterans Association on Thursday at the Iao Theater.
The "Concert of Magic and Hypnotism Show" will begin at 6 p.m. The cost is $10.

Vendors sought for Wailuku First Friday
WAILUKU - Wailuku town's First Friday event, held on the first Friday of each month, is soliciting street vendors for the public gathering on Market Street.
First Friday includes live entertainment, restaurant specials, local artists and crafters.
Artists, crafters and food vendors are being sought. The cost for a regular booth is $25; $40 for food vendors. Discounts are available for nonprofits and for double-booth space.
Nonprofit groups may provide information or sell items.

Rehabilitation topic at cardiac meeting
WAILUKU - Maui Memorial Medical Center's cardiac rehabilitation specialist will speak at the center's Cardiac Education Support Group meeting on Thursday from
noon to 1 p.m.
Kim Finney will appear in the Marion Hanlon Conference Room on the third floor of the Wailuku Tower. Her talk is free.
Free valet parking is available at the front entrance of the Kahului Tower.
The Cardiac Support Group meetings, held on the first Thursday of each month, are geared for cardiac patients and their families and friends.

'Power-Up' walking tips to be taught
WAILUKU - A "Power-Up" walking class will be offered at the War Memorial Stadium from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Aug. 14.
Tips will be offered on how to burn more calories through a walking routine. There also will be warm-up and cool-down exercises.
Those attending should wear appropriate shoes and comfortable clothing.
The class is co-sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and Kaunoa Senior Services.
The cost is $7 and includes a pedometer and Dynaband.

Rotarians to hear about Read Aloud
PUKALANI - A presentation on Rotary's support for Read Aloud America will be given Friday at the Rotary Club of Upcountry meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the Kamehameha Schools Maui high school cafeteria.
Larry and Joanne Laird will discuss the nonprofit organization that promotes literacy, encourages a love of reading in adults and children, and increases prospects for success in school and life. The Lairds will discuss Rotary's involvement in the program, which was founded in Hawaii in 1995.
The public is invited. There is a $10 charge for breakfast.

Burnout is focus of caregiver program
WAILUKU - A presentation on "The Caregiver's Burnout" by a representative of the Alzheimer's Association of Maui County will be held Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Elaine Slavinsky will cover the issue of burnout, which family caregivers can experience with devastating consequences, a news release announcing the talk said.
The gathering will help caregivers identify signs of stress and offer practical solutions.
The one-hour workshop, presented by Kaiser Permanente and held at its Maui Lani Clinic, is free and open to the public.

Infant CPR to be taught this month
WAILUKU - An infant CPR class will be held Aug. 12, 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.
Those attending the class will learn how to perform cardiopulmonary-resuscitation on a child from birth to 1 year old who is not breathing or has no heartbeat. Infant safety also will be covered.
Upon completion of the class, attendees will receive an American Heart Association Basic Heartsaver Card, valid for two years.
The cost is $20 for Kaiser members and $25 for non-Kaiser members. There will be no child care.

Child development class slated Aug. 13
WAILUKU - A class on child behavior and development will be held Aug. 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.
"Where Are You and Where Do You Want to Go?" is the title of the workshop on parenting of children ages 3 and older. The workshop will offer tools and attitudes that can help a child develop into a competent, respectful and loving individual, a news release on the workshop said.
The class is free and open to the public; there will be no child care.
