KIHEI - Two men remained hospitalized Wednesday after one man stabbed the other when they fought Tuesday night in Kihei, police said.
The fight occurred at about 10 p.m. and reportedly stemmed from an earlier altercation between the men at Kamaole Beach Park I, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division.
He said a 42-year-old man reported he was walking on East Keonekai Road when a 37-year-old man jumped out from bushes along the road and punched the older man.
The older man fell to the ground, with his attacker continuing to throw punches, before the 42-year-old pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man, Jakubczak said. He said the 42-year-old claimed he acted in self-defense.
The 37-year-old suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical condition when he was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, Jakubczak said.
The 42-year-old also was transported to the hospital after suffering an injury to his shoulder and a laceration on his wrist requiring surgery.
Both men gave no local address.
Police recovered a folding knife with a 3-inch blade.
Neither man was arrested as the police investigation continued.
