Alliance allows youths to engage with Maui Nui

KIHEI - Many high school freshmen and sophomores already contribute to the community by working, paying taxes and volunteering, and they are invited to join a program that can help them better understand the social and political processes that affect their lives.

The Youth Alliance is a program of Focus Maui Nui. Although free, the Alliance requires a commitment of at least one day a month. In return, students will be introduced to the operations of businesses such as Maui Electric Co.; scientific agencies such as the Institute for Astronomy; cultural and environmental projects such as the Honokowai Valley restoration; and the government. In the latter venue, students will get a chance to express personal concerns to leaders. Also scheduled is an off-island weekend tour to acquaint members with other communities.

Transportation to Maui activities for Lanai and Molokai youths is arranged.

The program is for 9th- and 10th-graders in Maui County, and the invitation is being extended as the new academic year begins.

Applications and information about Youth Alliance are at www.focusmauinui.com/YA/apply/apply.cfm.

Details also are available from Program Manager Barry Takahashi, at 875-2432 or barry@medb.org.

Applications are due Sept. 11. A recommendation from a teacher or counselor is required.

"The youth of Maui Nui already are contributing to the community" in many ways, Takahashi said. "Youth Alliance introduces them to the inner workings of businesses and agencies that are making decisions for the future."

The Maui Economic Development Board set up Focus Maui Nui to involve county residents in preparing for the future by addressing growth and its challenges and the protection of the islands' natural and cultural environments.

Focus Maui Nui created the Youth Alliance in 2005-06 as a way to engage the young people. The Alliance can empower members by showing how they can influence planning and policies for Maui Nui, Takahashi said.

"Members will also tell you they had a great time while getting a better handle on how things work in the Maui Nui community."

The Maui Economic Development Board is a nonprofit corporation established in 1982 with a focus on diversifying Maui's economy. MEDB is a partner with the County of Maui in pursuing a high-tech future with the private, public and nonprofit sectors at the local and national levels.

Focus Maui Nui is a component aimed at building consensus as the community's challenges are addressed and opportunities are cultivated.
