KAHULUI -- A 52-year-old pedestrian died Tuesday night after he was hit by a car while crossing Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului, police said.
The pedestrian was identified as Michael Owen, who had no local address.
Police said speed was determined to be a factor in the collision, which occurred at 9:21 p.m. as Owen was crossing Kaahumanu Avenue near Lono Avenue. The speed limit is 30 mph on that portion of the road.
He wasn't in a crosswalk when he was hit by a Dodge four-door sedan that was traveling east in the inside lane, police said. A 45-year-old Makawao man was driving the sedan.
Owen was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died, police said.
The eastbound portion of Kaahumanu Avenue was closed between Kane Street and Lono Avenue while police investigated the crash scene. The road was reopened shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The traffic death was the 14th this year on Maui County roads, the same number as at the same time last year.
It was also the third traffic death in the county this month, following a head-on two-vehicle collision Sunday night in Maalaea that killed a 24-year-old Lahaina woman. Also, an 83-year-old Wailuku man died Sept. 2, a day after he was in a head-on collision on Kahului Beach road near the Kahului boat ramp entrance.
