Maui groups organize relief drives to aid Samoa victims

October 3, 2009
The Maui News

Maui's Samoan community is organizing relief drives to gather supplies to help tsunami victims in Samoa.

Supplies can be dropped off at Executive Transportation Service, 30 Halawai, unit B7, in Lahaina; or at Extra Space Storage, 340 Alamakani St., Kahului, according to an announcement.

Starting Monday, the Baldwin High School front office will also serve as a drop-off location, said Ipo Wilhelm, who is helping organize the effort.

Water, rice, canned goods, dry goods, clothing, blankets, baby formula, diapers or hygiene products will be accepted.

The drive is being organized with support from Church on the Go, the musical group Off Tomorrow and Artistry8.

The group is also looking for support in shipping the materials to Samoa.

Wilhelm said many people in the Samoan community had family members affected by the Sept. 29 earthquake and tsunami. Her mother is still waiting for word on an elderly aunt who is missing.

"It's kind of an overwhelming feeling," she said. "We feel so hopeless. There's nothing we can do."

For more information, call Ilima Lua-Lokan at 281-2788 or John Akapo at 268-0748.
