Coleen d'Avignon will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild in Paia Friday through Oct. 22. Meet the artist during an opening reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. Festivities will include refreshments and live music.
Artist d'Avignon has been beading since the late '80s. Originally perfecting her technique in Sedona, Ariz., she applied her beadwork to hand-crafted leather bags, reflecting the Native American style of the Southwest.
After moving to Maui in 2004, she was introduced to the art of Japanese 'Kumihimo' and fell in love with this ancient technique of braiding. By using this weaving technique, eight strands of beads along with freshwater pearls and semiprecious gems are woven together to create one-of-a-kind necklaces and bracelets.
