SALLY J. DANIELS photo
Sally J. Daniels snapped this photo of a Hawaiian monk seal mother and her pup basking at Koki Beach in Hana last week. With only around 1,200 still in existence, the endangered seals were named Hawaii’s official state mammal in 2008. Although they can swim great distances, 90 percent of Hawaiian monk seals remain at their birth island for life, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
