The Hawaii Supreme Court has affirmed that Maui County Council Member Sol Kahoohalahala is a resident of Lahaina -- not Lanai, the district he represents.
In a 66-page ruling issued today, the court found that the state Board of Registration did not err when it concluded last year that "Kahoohalahala did not have the right to remain a registered voter of Lanai."
The court also struck down arguments that the Board of Registration didn't have jurisdiction to hear the case, and that it exceeded its authority with its ruling.
Kahoohalahala was born and lived much of his life on Lanai, but in recent years has lived in a Lahaina home with his wife while he worked on Maui. He had argued that he intended to return to Lanai and live with his brother in a family home.
