Softball team takes senior games title

ST. GEORGE, UTAH --- Five players from Maui helped Hanapa'a, a 60-and-over softball team, win the gold medal at the Huntsman World Senior Games held Oct. 5-9.

Maui residents Dennis Holland, Hiram Kaukane, Michael Dickens, Lonnie Hardesty and Leo Chesebro helped lead the team of players from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and transplanted Hawaii players who now live in Las Vegas.

Hanapa'a took two of their first three preliminary games before winning 15-4 in their first double-elimination round contest, with Kaukane sharing the victory. They went on to an 18-9 victory in the second game and a 18-13 win in the third game behind Hardesty's 3-for-3 performance. Kaukane earned the victory in the fourth game, too, helping Hanapa'a to another 18-13 triumph.

Trailing 11-0 against Jeld-Wen in the championship game, Hanapa'a stormed back with a five-run sixth inning to capture their second gold medal in four years.
