State bowling: Gushikuma places fifth

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS --- Corey Gushikuma of Baldwin High School placed fifth in the Billy Tees Boys State Bowling Championships on Friday, finishing at 1,634.

Gushikuma, last year's state champion, had games of 202, 129 and 179 at Schofield Bowling Center. Competitors bowled six games on Thursday.

''I'm pretty satisfied,'' Gushikuma said.

Gushikuma's second game Friday was his lowest of the tournament. He finished with three games with a score above 200.

''The second game with Corey, there were a lot of splits, so that hurt a little,'' said Baldwin coach Rodney Carillo.

The Bears finished with a score of 7,291, placing fifth in the team competition. Baldwin had scores of 826, 803 and 778 on Friday.

Kyra Calhau of Maui High was the top girls finisher from the Maui Interscholastic League, finishing in 30th place at 1,388 after games of 154, 178 and 171.

Chyane Balios had the top score for the Baldwin girls, posting games of 170, 144 and 148 for a 46th-place total of 1,285, helping the Bears place eighth with a 5,875 after scores of 689, 676 and 662.

Jaron Goto of was the boys individual champion with a 1,740, helping Hawaii Baptist Academy win the team title. Goto had scores of 170, 211 and 200 on Friday. The Eagles had a team score of 7,798 after games of 848, 890 and 921.

Kapolei won the girls team title, and had the individual champion, Raelena Mattos, who posted games of 189, 186 and 162 to finish at 1,620. The Hurricanes' team scores of 792, 845 and 885 gave them a total of 7,427.

Tyler Yamasaki of Baldwin was 30th in the boys standings with a 1,484 after games of 125, 202 and 171.

''He got used to the oil pattern after the first game, and the last two games, he came on and figured it out,'' Carillo said.

The Bears' Kasey Munetake (145, 144, 133) was 35th with a 1,454, Kallen Yamasaki (150, 169, 179) was 44th with a 1,429, Chaz Cabero (204, 159, 116) tied for 60th with a 1,288 and Aaron Yoshizu (151, 156, 124) was 63rd with a 1,283.

Jeremy Chang of King Kekaulike was 51st with a 1,389 after games of 169, 205 and 149.

Maui High's Tarryn Nascimento was 54th in the girls competition, posting scores of 104, 171 and 136 for a 1,243. Baldwin's Kimberly Yagi (122, 133, 136) was 56th with a 1,206. The other three Baldwin bowlers did not compete in all nine games --- Brooke Higa had a 933, Lauren Nouchi a 689 and Ashley Yagi a 304.
