LIHUE --- Hailey Grossman of Seabury Hall placed second in the Honolulu Marathon Girls State Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Grossman finished in 19 minutes, 7.95 seconds at the Island School course. Elli Brady won in 18:53.85, leading Punahou to a fifth consecutive team championship.

''I'm a little disappointed. I ran the best that I can,'' Grossman said.

Grossman and Honokaa's Tialana Greenwell, the eventual seventh-place finisher, ran together in the lead early. Brady made her move to the front just past the second mile.

''Hailey said she tried to surge, and it wasn't there for her,'' said Spartans coach Tom Rehrer. ''Elli ran great.''

Rocky Balala was eighth in the boys race in 16:55.25, helping Maui High finish fourth in the team standings. Margarito Martinez of Leilehua was the boys individual champion in 15:50.05.

''I'm proud of our team. They worked so hard,'' Balala said.

The Sabers finished with 107 points. Kamehameha Oahu, led by the third-place finish of Jordan Thibodeau (16:44.95) was the team champion with 56 points.

Punahou was second in the boys team standings with 85 points, and Iolani (94) was third.

''We were the top public school, and we finished ahead of the defending state champion (Leilehua, which placed fifth with 124 points),'' said Maui High coach Jared Welch.

Pierce Murphy of Island School was the individual runner-up in 16:18.35.

The Seabury Hall girls were seventh in the team standings with 171 points. Punahou finished with 62.

''I was hoping for top five, but top 10 is not bad,'' said Rehrer, whose team placed second in each of the previous two years. ''We lost five girls from last year's team.''

Grossman was fourth in the state in 2006, then placed fifth in 2007 and last year.

''I'm kind of sad it's going to be over, but I might be doing some more running in California,'' said Grossman, who has two state track titles in the 3,000 meters.

In the boys race, Nicola Perez-Garreaud of Maui High was 11th in 17:12.25.

''As a team, we wanted to go for the top five. We wanted it really, really bad,'' Perez-Garreaud said.

The Sabers' Jestoni Ganotisi (17:56.30) was 38th, Caxious Florendo-Bourne (17:57.50) was 40th, Angelito Cuaresma (18:11.50) was 54th, Terrance Sayers (18:39.45) was 84th and Tyler Alfante (20:01.90) was 142nd.

Balala said he had to bounce back from a challenging start.

''I went out, and I was trying to run with the top 10, and I kind of got stuck, and then I took the turn and got pushed around a little and rolled my ankle,'' he said. ''I tried to regain my strength. I just started off, and tried to stay relaxed back in the top 30. It's all mental from there. I wanted to drop out because of my ankle. After the first mile I felt strong, and I started gaining more position. The last 800 or so, I just gave it my all.''

As for the ankle after the race, Balala said: ''It's really fat and swollen right now.''
