Students get to root of the problem with invasives

The Kamehameha Schools' freshman class made their second of four trips this school year to lend a hand to the staff at the Hawaii Nature Center in Iao Valley on Friday afternoon.

They tended to the gardens fronting the Hawaii Nature Center.

Coffee tree trunks needed to be wiggled back and forth while removing it from former taro lands. Removing the coffee by the roots is the only way to ensure it will not re-sprout.

"If you take out the invasive plants, then the natives will grow," Monica Borge said.
