Valley Isle Sports in BriefNovember 14, 2009Jones, Kiffmann have strong showings COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Aisha Jones and Miles Kiffmann of Kiffmann Taekwondo both finished in the top five of their divisions at the Youth Olympic Games Team Trials on Nov. 6 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Kiffmann reached the finals of the 105.9-121.3-pound division by defeating Chris Jantz of Texas 8-1 before losing to national team member Olie Burton of Virginia 3-0. Jones lost in the quarterfinals of the 97.1-108 division to Caitlin Vandrisse of Montana. The bout was tied at 5-5 before Vandrisse won in overtime. _______________ Isagawa, Chiarella go undefeated against Japan WAIKOLOA, Hawaii --- Maui golfers Cassey Isagawa and Alex Chiarella both went 3-0 while representing the Hawaii team in the third annual USA Hawaii/Japan Junior Cup last weekend at King's Course. Team Japan rallied on the last day to beat Hawaii 23.5-20 to win back the cup. On the first day of competition, Isagawa teamed with Scott Yamashita to beat Eri Joma and Yuto Goto 2 and 1 in fourballs. On Day 2, she and Bradley Shigezawa dominated Kazuya Koura and Mami Fukuda 5 and 4 in foursomes. Isagawa then wrapped up the tournament with a 2 and 1 win over Mamiko Higa. Chiarella and fellow Valley Isle golfer Aaron Kunitomo teamed up to defeat Daichi Morisugi and Takuya Mizuishi 2 up in fourballs. In foursomes, Chiarella and Alina Ching beat Yosuke Toyota and Sae Yamamura 1 up. Chiarella then beat Mizuishi 3 and 1. Kunitomo finished with a 2-1 record. In foursomes, he and fellow Mauian Justin Keiley defeated Hiromi Kinoshita and Soudai Hirayama 2 and 1. He later lost to Toyota 4 and 3. Keiley finished 2-0-1. After he and Alice Kim played Toshiumi Kushioka and Satoko Sawada to a draw, and picking up the win with Kunitomo, Keiley defeated Koura 3 and 2. _______________ Kahana's Williams wins Paradise Cup HONOLULU --- Sports Club Kahana's Ryan Williams won the heavyweight division at the 26th annual Paradise Cup bodybuilding competition on Friday. Competing for the first time, Williams elected to forgo the novice division and enter the open division and face off against veteran bodybuilders in hopes of eventually turning professional. By winning the national qualifier, Williams must next place in the top three of a national show in order to qualify for a professional show. _______________ Fastpitch softball clinic scheduled for Nov. 28 KIHEI --- South Maui Parks and Recreation along with Kupaa Softball Club will be holding a girls fastpitch softball clinic on Nov. 28 at Kalama Park. Gates open at noon followed by practice sessions and a drivers' meeting. A qualifying session starts at 6 p.m. followed by races. General admission is $5.
