Man gets prison for burglary, theft
WAILUKU - For burglarizing a friend's home and stealing personal belongings including an Xbox, a 26-year-old Lanai man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday.
Because Likeke I. Davis is a repeat offender, he must serve three years and four months in prison before he is eligible for parole. He was given credit for time he already served in prison.
"Was it worth it?" 2nd Circuit Judge Richard Bissen asked during sentencing.
"No," Davis responded.
Bissen said he wondered why Davis would steal in a small community such as Lanai.
"This has got to be the most unsophisticated crime I've heard of," Bissen said. "Wouldn't it have been easier if you asked them to borrow it?"
Davis apologized during sentencing.
"My actions were wrong," he said.
Davis pleaded no contest to first-degree burglary and second-degree theft for the incident that took place sometime between Dec. 21, 2008, and Jan. 19, 2009, according to court records. During that time, the victims, a Lanai City family, had gone on vacation and when they returned they found that someone had broken into their home and stolen items valued at $1,449.
Later in January, one of the victims had gone to visit a friend when she saw her Xbox games on her friend's living room entertainment center, along with a nylon dog carrier that had also been taken from the home.
Davis' family turned over the games to an officer and agreed to a search of the home, where police found the victim's dog carrier in Likeke Davis' room. Davis' family later found out in February that the stolen Xbox was at someone else's residence, got it back and turned it in to police, court records show.
Likeke Davis admitted to taking the Xbox and games and said he carried them in the dog carrier. But he denied taking a ring and piggy bank.
Also Friday, Likeke Davis was resentenced in an old burglary and theft case. He was given five years in prison for second-degree burglary and one year in jail for third-degree theft. All sentences will run concurrently with the new case.
