Man stopped for reckless driving on pali arrested for suspended license

POSTED: November 16, 2009

LAHAINA - Police arrested a driver who was found to have a suspended driver's license after he was stopped for driving recklessly while passing other vehicles in heavy traffic on the pali Thursday morning, police said.

Artemio Correa, 22, of Kihei, was heading toward Lahaina when he was stopped in a white 1992 Honda at 8 a.m. near Puamana Park, said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District.

He said police were investigating reports that the Honda had passed at least one other vehicle on the pali and was trying to pass others.

After making the traffic stop, officers learned Correa's license had been suspended, Hirata said.

"If you don't have a valid license, maybe you shouldn't be passing on the pali," he said.

Hirata said Lahaina officers plan to step up traffic enforcement.

"When you consider the fact that a lot of our fatalities and serious crashes involve alcohol or speeding, I think we really need to put more emphasis into the enforcement side," he said. "People need to know we will be increasing our enforcement efforts."

After Lahaina patrol officer Jun Hattori arrested Correa for driving while his license was suspended, Correa posted $250 bail to be released.
