Na Mele O Maui Song Competition

Grades 4, 5 of Paia School named Na Mele O Maui overall winner

WAILUKU - Paia School grades 4 and 5 were named the overall winner of the 37th annual Na Mele O Maui Song Competition on Thursday.

Paia singers won for their renditions of a competition song, "Haleakala Hula," and their choice song, "Ka Uahi O Kula." Twenty-two classes from kindergarden to grade 12 competed in the Hawaiian song contest held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

In the event's student art competition, Kamehameha Schools Maui 10th-grader Bridgette Ige won best-of-show honors for her ceramic "opihi."

The theme of both events was "Mai Uka A Kai," or "From the Mountains to the Sea."

Other winners of the song portion of the competition, in order of ranking, were:

* Division I (grades K-1): Ke Kula Kaiapuni O Pa'ia; Kahului School.

* Division II (grades 2-3): Paia School; Kahului School.

* Division III (grades 4-5): Paia Elementary; Kamehameha Maui.

* Division IV (grades 6-8): Kamehameha Maui; Kula Kaiapuni O Kulalapu'u.

* Opio Division (grades 9-12): Kamehameha Maui.

Other winners of the art competition, in order of ranking, were:

* Two-dimensional art, Division I (grades 9-10): Devin Galloway (Maui High School); Vy Luong (Maui High); Bailey Pendergrast (Lahainaluna High School).

* Two-dimensional art, Division II (grades 11-12): Tiffany Suh (Baldwin High School); Ashley Visitacion (Maui High); Sarah Yadao (Maui High); Lori Lee Mendoza and Rachel Yanos (Maui High).

* Three-dimensional art, Division I: Ken Kanemitsu (Kamehameha Maui).

* Three-dimensional art, Division II: Bridgette Ige (Kamehameha Maui); Jonalyn Dumelod, John Kevin Magaoay, Katelyn Neeck, William Thompson III, Derrick Torricer (Maui High); Kaili'i Faust (Lahainaluna); Sarah Ing (Kamehameha Maui)

Ka'anapali Beach Resort Association sponsored the event.
