Search for Lindquists suspended

HANA - A three-day land and air search for Hana residents Carl and Rae Lindquist ended Monday when Maui firefighters conducted a 2-hour search of a streambed and a shoreline near where the couple's battered sport utility vehicle was found Saturday morning.

The couple is believed to have been swept into Honomaele River by floodwaters as the Lindquists were driving to their Ulaino Road residence Thursday night following Thanksgiving dinner at the Hotel Hana-Maui.

Although searchers found nothing Monday, Hana community members pledged to continue looking for the Lindquists, whose 2004 Ford SUV was found approximately 100 yards from the ocean.

Fire crews did three searches by helicopter of coastal waters and the shoreline on Saturday and Sunday. The air search was conducted two miles along the shoreline and about a half-mile offshore, according to a Maui County news release.

Lindquist family friend Dawn Lono, who also works at the couple's Hana Coast Realty office, said services would be held for the couple on Oahu and in Hana, although service dates had not been set as of Monday.

Lono said she would be meeting with close friends to discuss ways to honor the Lindquists, both 75. The Lindquists' son and daughter, who live on the Mainland, will be consulted to see if their parents had any final wishes, she said.

Carl Lindquist was a community leader, owner of Hana Coast Realty and former manager of the Hotel Hana-Maui. He was also a former Maui News community correspondent.

The Realtors Association of Maui also is remembering the Lindquists. Rae Lindquist was an association member since 1985, and Carl Lindquist was a member since 1988.

"It's impossible to convey the sadness that we all feel for the loss of our two longtime friends and Realtors," the association said in an e-mail to members. "While we remained hopeful that they would be found, as time passed, our hopes faded."
