Vili Tolatau (fourth from left) of Maui Rugby’s U17 team prepares to steal a ball that had been tipped by teammate Siueli Vaha (far right) during a 42-0 loss to the Pacific Coast Rugby Union Grizzlies on Thursday in Lahaina. Maui coach Jack Breen said the match with the Grizzlies, who have several USA Rugby U17 All-Americans, helped prepare his team for the Aloha Friends for Youth state tournament in March. Four Maui players — Loa Puteni, Tavita Falepatalangi, Paki Vaka and Oto Mafileo — made their match debuts on Thursday. A referee certification was conducted in conjunction with the match, and Maui’s Manasi Sokai, Pita Totau and Moli Pousima earned International Rugby Board level-one certification. The 2010 season will begin Jan. 10, with teams for boys and girls born from 1991 to 1999. For more information, go to maui-rugby.org.
