OLOWALU - An 84-year-old La Jolla, Calif., man died Wednesday after he reportedly hit his head on the hull while swimming next to a charter catamaran, police said.

Lahaina patrol officers were assigned at 12:47 p.m. to respond to a report of an unresponsive man aboard the Gemini catamaran, said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District.

He said the vessel was about 200 yards offshore of Olowalu. The man's adult daughter, who was also swimming next to the boat, reported seeing him hit his head on the hull, then realizing he wasn't responding, Hirata said.

The man was taken aboard the boat, where crew members began efforts to revive him, Hirata said.

Lifeguards aboard personal watercraft responded, bringing the man to shore, where medics and firefighters continued to try to revive the man.

He was pronounced dead at 2 p.m.

Police weren't releasing his name Wednesday while family members on the Mainland were being notified of the death.
