Brown bag workshops start on Thursday

KAHULUI - The first of the brown bag workshops for February will be "Protecting Ideas and Avoiding Infringement: The Essentials of Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights and Trade Secrets" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Intellectual property attorney Shannon Imlay will be the presenter.

The workshops are sponsored by the county Business Resource Center. Most are held at the center's Maui Mall offices. All are free unless indicated otherwise. Other offerings this month will be:

* "The Magic of Marketing" from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday with Timothy Wenk, a professional magician for 30 years. The first 15 people who attend will get a free audio compact disc, "How to Double Your Business.

* "How to Use Social Media to Improve Your Business" from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 11 with Peter Liu.

* "Talk Story about Starting a Nonprofit" from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 16 with Stuart Funke-d'Egnuff. He is the executive director of the Tri-Isle Resource Conservation & Development Council.

* "Building a Bankable Marketing Plan" from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 17 with Leslie Mullens, president of PLAYBOOK Consulting Group.

* "Taking Control of Your Credit" from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 18 with Delia Wilson, loan fund manager with MEO Business Development Corp.

* "Starting a Business in Maui County" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 24 with Anna K. Ribucan of the Maui County Office of Economic Development.

* "Government Contracts for Small Maui Companies" from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 25 with Evette Lau of MEO Business Development., which is partnering with the Hawaii Procurement Technical Assistance Center to assist businesses in becoming successful federal government contractors.

Seating is limited. Reservations are requested. Call the Business Resource Center at 873-8247. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches.
