Sculptor and master goldsmith Barclay Hill will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild beginning Friday through Feb. 26. Meet the artist during an opening reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, which will include a new series of jewelry, refreshments and live music.
Hill graduated from San Diego State University in 1971. He has lived abroad for 19 years in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Bali. Since moving to Maui in 1985, he has designed a line of gold sculpture jewelry that is sold and collected worldwide. He also has designed a successful bronze sculpture line, and created a large bronze whale monument at Whaler's Village in Kaanapali. In the last several years the artist has been working with ceramics, glass, fine woods and stone to create beautiful rich sculptures.

Maui Thing has teamed up with young artists to welcome this year’s Chinese New Year. The Wailuku-based clothing company hosted a Year of the Tiger-themed art contest for students in grades kindergarten to 5, and announced the top prizes at last week’s Wailuku First Friday festivities. Hurry, before it's gone! This is your last chance to view the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center's Annual Juried Exhibition 2010, on display now through Feb. 18 at the Makawao estate. Works range from large-scale oil paintings by Julie Houck, Tony Walholm and Akira Iha to smaller three-dimensional works inspired by the travels of artist Melissa Chimera. Samantha Howard's metal work inspired by the form of the human heart is at once delicate and yet exudes strength in its creation. Jaisy Hanlon received the Jurors' Choice Award and has created a visually beautiful melding of watercolor, copper, and enamel representing the animal and plant world. The Lana'i Glass Exhibition will showcase the work of 14 glass artists from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Four Season Resorts Lana'i at Manele Bay's Ihilani Restaurant. Glass artwork will be available for purchase. There will also be a free panel discussion titled "Process of Glass Art" from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The show is a benefit for the Lana'i Art Center and events are free and open to the public.

A handful of artful creations recently landed at Molokai's Ho'olehua Airport, featuring the creativity and talent of local artists. On display now are paintings by Catherine Buchanan portraying scenes of Kalaupapa, Wailau and Saint Damien of Molokai. Paul Elia's wood and bone carvings depict the local traditional craftsmanship that is still very much a part of daily life on Molokai.
"This is a vital portal, not only for our residents and visitors through the Ho'olehua terminal, but for our keiki to be inspired to pursue artistic endeavors and to express the beauty of our island home," Halawa Valley resident Anakala Pilipo Solatario said of the exhibit.

The Lahaina Arts Society will once again host its Fine Arts Fair on Monday, Feb. 20 and 21, under the historic Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Internationally acclaimed Russian artist, Alexei Butirskiy, will visit Dolphin Galleries at The Shops of Wailea for a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
