WAILUKU - An 18-year-old man was arrested after he ran from a stolen pickup truck that was seen traveling north in the southbound lane Wednesday night on Waiale Road, police said.

Wailuku patrol officer Corrine Chang saw the white pickup truck turn onto Waiale Road from the driveway of a complex without stopping shortly before 9 p.m., said Lt. Tim Gapero of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the officer tried to stop the truck, but the driver refused, driving left of the centerline so other drivers had to maneuver off the road to avoid a collision. The truck was heading north toward Lower Main Street and had passed Waiinu Road when the driver jumped out of the truck, Gapero said. He said Chang ran after the driver before finding him behind some houses off Waiale Road and arresting him.

He was identified as Jonah Mukini of Wailuku. His bail was set at $1,200 after he was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.

Gapero said the truck had just been stolen from the complex it was leaving when the officer spotted the vehicle.

According to court records, Mukini is awaiting sentencing in another stolen car case.
