WAILUKU - After a day of showers, Maui County should see clearer skies today and tomorrow, a forecaster said Thursday, with sun, regular trade winds, and scattered and passing trade showers expected for the weekend.
But big waves should return.
The National Weather Service issued a high-surf advisory for north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai through 6 p.m. today, with expected wave heights of 15 to 20 feet.
A cold front blew through the county Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, causing rains to fall heavily in areas.
In East Maui, the West Wailua Iki gauge showed 4.15 inches of rain over a 24-hour period ending at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, said forecaster Chris Brenchley at the National Weather Service on Oahu.
Other places that received heavy rainfall included Hana Airport with 2.22 inches for the same period, Kahakuloa with 1.94 inches, and Pukalani with 1.08 inches. A Molokai gauge also showed 1.30 inches for the 24-hour period.
Brenchley said the cold front causing the rains, mostly in the Windward areas, moved past Maui County over the course of the day Thursday, with some lingering showers and overcast skies.
He said typical trade wind weather should return by the weekend, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.
