KAHULUI - Pukalani Elementary School's Math Matters team took first place in the team competition at the 16th annual Math Matters competition March 6 at Maui High School.
Overall, 11 local elementary schools participated in the event sponsored by the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers, Maui Chapter.
Wailuku Elementary's team took second place, and Kaunakakai Elementary took third-place honors.

Romar de Castro, a 5th-grader at Wailuku Elementary, was the individual high scorer. Josh Kepler, a 4th-grader at Kihei Charter School came in second, and Noah Magbual, a 5th-grader at Waihee Elementary, took third.
All teams and individual winners received plaques, with the perpetual trophy presented to the winning team.
