Keith Barnhart of Oak Park Chimney Co. climbs a ladder to a scaffold on the Pioneer Mill Co. smokestack last week. Already atop the scaffold is co-worker Dan Terry. They are working to restore the historic Lahaina landmark, built in 1928. The mill buildings and the top 14 feet of the smokestack were torn down in 2006. Workers are re-enforcing, repainting and rebuilding the top 14 feet of the structure, which will have a decorative crown when completed. The smokestack will be 225 feet tall when renovation work is done in about four months. The restoration work is a project of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.
