HONOLULU - Mothers Against Drunk Driving recognized Maui Police Department juvenile investigators during an awards ceremony last week for their work last year in preventing underage drinking.
The MPD Juvenile Crime Prevention Division received the unit award as part of MADD's 18th annual youth and law enforcement awards.
MPD Assistant Chief Sydney Kikuchi and Sgt. David Silva, who supervises the juvenile team, attended the presentation Thursday at The Pacific Club in Honolulu.
The juvenile investigators are officers Dale Copuz, Gordon Sagun, Sam Gasmen, Mary-Lee Sagawinit and Kyle Nagano. Often, they work weekends and evenings to do enforcement aimed at deterring crime and curbing illegal juvenile activities.
MADD also gave special recognition to police patrol officers who made the most intoxicated driving arrests in their districts. For Maui County, those officers were Dennis Arnds in Wailuku with 40 arrests, Kirk Pyland on Lanai with four arrests, Jeffrey Platt in Hana with one arrest, Matthew Bigoss in Lahaina with 13 arrests, Rusty Lawson on Molokai with 28 arrests and William Melton in Kihei with 14 arrests.
