The Maui News

Seventy-one students received higher-education degrees Friday from the University of Hawaii through the UH Center on Maui.

The graduates included engineer Michael Reiley, who received the first doctorate in engineering awarded through the UH Center program.

Reiley and five other enginners at the firm Textron Enterprises had wanted to improve their professional credentials but could not afford to leave their jobs on Maui to enroll in graduate school. The group approached University of Hawaii Maui College Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto, who helped set up a distance learning program with the university's Manoa campus for the doctoral candidates.
