WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2

'TAYLOR CAMP'

Follow the journey of "Taylor Camp" at 7 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater. The film follows the lives of 13 young Mainlanders - refugees from campus riots, war protests and police brutality - who fled to Kauai in 1969. Soon this little tribe of men, women and children was arrested and sentenced to 90 days of hard labor for having no money and no home. Island resident Howard Taylor, brother of actress Elizabeth, bailed out the group and invited them to camp on his vacant oceanfront land, then left them on their own without any restrictions, regulations or supervision. In 1977, after condemning the village to make way for a state park, government officials torched their houses, leaving little but ashes and memories of "the best days of our lives." The film reveals a community that created order without rules, rejecting materialism for the healing power of nature. This film contains some nudity and explicit language and may not be suitable for all ages. A question and answer session with director Robert C. Stone will follow the screening. Event is sponsored by Finding Utopia Film Festival. Tickets are $12, plus applicable fees; available at the MACC box office, 242-7469 or www.mauiarts.org.
