Kahoolawe waters open for trolling two weekends

June 3, 2010
The Maui News

KAHOOLAWE - The Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission has announced that trolling will be allowed for permitted vessels Saturday and Sunday and again on June 19 and 20.

Hawaii Administrative Rules require that all vessels must register annually with the commission before entering the reserve during designated trolling dates. Registered vessels also are required to file catch reports with the commission any time they fish in the reserve, whether fish are caught or not.

A $25 permitting fee will be applied to the required registration process.

Access to Kahoolawe waters is restricted because of the ongoing presence of unexploded ordnance as well as to protect marine resources around the island formerly used as a military bombing range. The commission restricts boating, ocean recreation and other activities within two miles of the island.

To register or for more information, contact Dean Tokishi at 243-5889 or send e-mail to dtokishi@kirc.hawaii.gov or go to the website kahoolawe.hawaii.gov to download a registration packet.

Packets also are available at the state Division of Boating and Recreation at 210 Imi Kala St., Suite 205, and at Maui Sporting Goods, 92 N. Market St., both in Wailuku.
