ULTIMATE '80s DANCE PARTY
Maui OnStage is promising a totally, like, awesome time at its Ultimate '80s Dance Party featuring the Cheryl Rae Band, costumes, games and prizes at 7 p.m. at the Historic Iao Theater. Admission is a sliding scale donation of $5 to $20.
COMEDIAN VANDA MIKOLOSKI
Edgy stand-up comedian Vanda Mikoloski will present an intimate evening of laughs and insights - "hahas and ahas" - from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at The Studio Maui in the Haiku Marketplace. This Los Angeles-based funny gal will crack jokes on topics ranging from bad yoga teachers and meditation to voices in the head. O-BON FESTIVAL
Enjoy one of Hawaii's most colorful traditions during an o-bon festival at Wailuku Jodo with a service to honor ancestors at 7 p.m., followed by dancing at 8 p.m. Now through August, residents and visitors will flock to Buddhist temples from Lahaina to Kula to experience one of Japan's most celebrated traditions. The temples come alive with glowing lanterns and booming taiko drumming, while dancers in colorful kimono circle the yagura tower through the night. Admission is free. For details, call 244-0066.
'SLEEPING BEAUTY'
It's a new twist on an old tale as Pro-Arts, Inc. presents its musical adaptation of the classic "Sleeping Beauty." This "fractured fairy tale" begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Pro-Arts Playhouse in Kihei, featuring nine actors playing all the roles in this version of the classic Grimm Brothers tale. The musical is complete with a beautiful princess, a handsome prince with a magic sword, a doting king and queen and their story-telling assistant, a wise-cracking vulture, a psychic frog, good fairies to bring a happy ending, and one really bad fairy to make things difficult. Audience members are seated right next to the stage for a surround-theatre experience. All ages are welcome. Following the performance, the audience is invited to a meet and greet with the characters, completing this magical theatrical event. AUNG SAN SOO KYI BENEFIT
Spend an evening with author, activist, satirist and former Buddhist monk Alan Clements, as he celebrates the 65th birthday of Aung San Soo Kyi. Burma's Nobel Peace laureate, political prisoner and elected leader of her country's nonviolent struggle for freedom is now in her 14th year of incarceration. The benefit begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Renzai Zen Center in Paia (adjacent to Baldwin Beach.) Advance tickets are $25 online at www.worlddharma.com or $35 at the door the night of the event.
'4 FATHERS, 4 SONS"
Celebrate Father's Day weekend with four famous Hawaiian musical families: Dennis and David Kamakahi; George and Keoki Kahumoku; Kevin and Ikaika Brown and Richard and Kai Ho'opi'i during the "4 Father's, 4 Sons" concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Studio Theater. This one-of-a-kind evening will begin with each duo performing in their unique family style, including slack key guitar, ukulele, vocal harmonies and falsetto melodies. Round two will offer a lively competition between the musicians as they vie for audience approval and applause. In a late development, due to an injury Keoki Kahumoku has been replaced on the bill by Garret Probst, George Kahumoku's nephew. ORCHESTRA CONCERT
The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra will hold a dinner and benefit concert at the Maui Tropical Plantation, featuring the musical stylings of recent Na Hoku Hanohano winner Uluwehi Guerrero, along with hula by his Halau Hula Kauluokala. Seventeen-year-old cello prodigy Riana Anthony will perform a solo by Paganini, followed by two selections by Honolulu's Lifen Anthony Cello Quintet. The evening will close with open salsa and Latin dancing to the tunes of The Latin Project. The event will begin with a silent auction at 5:30, followed by dinner at 6:30 and music at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person or $700 for a table of eight with preferred seating, available at at Maui Specialty Chocolates or Ululani's Shave Ice in Kahului, or online at www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org/support.
