Thompson scores two goals in Maui United loss

BERNALILLO, N.M. - The Maui United Soccer Club 94 boys team lost 3-2 to Santa Clara Sporting in the under-16 division at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional tournament Tuesday.

Maui United went ahead early with a goal by Mattias Thompson in the fifth minute on an assist by Richie Rivera. Santa Clara, champion of Northern California, scored in the 32nd minute, leaving the game tied at the half.

In the 47th, Thompson scored again, this time on an assist by Willie Harris, to give the lead back to Maui United, but Santa Clara scored in the 66th and 73rd minutes to get the win.

Maui United fell to 0-2-0 in pool play while Santa Clara improved to 1-0-1. Maui United plays Jammers SC of Southern California today.
