HILLSBORO, Ore. - Maui teams went 1-2 on Friday, the first day of the Portland Cup soccer tournament.

The Maui United 96 boys, playing in the under-15 division, defeated FC Portland 96 Navy 2-0.

The Maui United 94 girls lost 1-0 to FC Portland Purple, the top-rated under-17 team in the state, and the Manuia o Maui 96 girls lost 4-1 to FC Portland Platinum.

Chandler Alo scored in the 11th minute for the Maui United boys on an assist by Jaren Otani, who added a goal 11 minutes into the second half off a cross from Rhys Lendio.

''A solid performance overall by the kids,'' said coach Fred Guzman. ''They created at least another handful of excellent scoring opportunities and were very organized, for the most part, on the defensive end of the field.

''The key players today were center midfielders Juaquin Navarro-Bonilla and Daniel Quenga. They helped hold the middle defensively and allowed us to build our attack with good possession."

Christine Kenagy scored for Manuia o Maui.

All three Maui teams will play two matches apiece today.
