COUNTY / IN BRIEFJuly 15, 2010Pre-sale fair tickets on sale as of today WAILUKU - Discounted pre-sale tickets for the 88th Maui County Fair go on sale today. The tickets will be available until Sept. 19. Pre-sale and Sunday tickets cost $5 for adults ($7 at the gate) and $2 for children 5 to 11 years old ($3 at the gate). Children 4 years old and younger are free. Pre-sale tickets may be purchased at all American Savings Bank locations on Maui and Molokai, at First Hawaiian Bank locations on Maui and Lanai, and at the Maui County Fair administrative office (opening at the end of July) in the War Memorial Complex parking lot. Groups interested in selling fair tickets may contact fair cashier Dancine Takahashi at 264-2687. Groups can earn $1 per ticket sold. This year's fair theme is "Celebrating Community." The fair runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3. ***** Akaku seeks board member nominees KAHULUI - Akaku: Maui Community Television is seeking applicants for its board of directors. The nonprofit has two openings for members of the public on its board. Candidates must be residents of Maui County. Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume detailing community affiliations, employment history, length of residency and comments on what they can contribute to the organization. For more information, call 871-5554. ***** Burger fundraiser for K-AKU 88.5 KAHULUI - K-AKU 88.5 FM radio will benefit from a "Fresh-off-the-Grill Hamburger Fundraiser" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in front of Whole Foods Market at the Maui Mall. The menu will include fresh grilled organic beef hamburgers, potato chips and potato salad for $8 and cold drinks for $1. All proceeds will go to K-AKU's programming of traditional paniolo country and Hawaiian music. K-AKU is a nonprofit, noncommercial, educational radio station operated with the support of Akaku: Maui Community Television. The station is entirely listener supported. ***** Biodynamic garden workshop is Friday WAIHEE - A workshop on biodynamic gardening and farming will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Lokelani 'Ohana Waihe'e Farm. The workshop costs $75, with lunch included. The session will be led by instructor Jason Harris of the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics in Virginia. Biodynamics is a way of revitalizing the soil through the introduction of microorganisms. Workshop participants will learn various composting techniques, work on biodynamic preparations and understand more about seeds. For more information, contact Christina Chang at 249-0254. ***** Car seat inspection clinic is Saturday KAHULUI - Free child car seat inspections will be done from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Maui Marketplace in Kahului. Those interested in having child car seats checked to see whether they're properly installed should show up with the child, car seat and car. An inspection takes a minimum of 30 minutes for each seat. The inspections are done on a first-come, first-served basis. Under state law, child car seats are required for children under age 4. Children from ages 4 to 7 are required to be restrained in either car seats or booster seats while riding in vehicles. Information about upcoming child car seat inspections is available on Facebook by looking up Maui County Child Passenger Safety. ***** Kaho'ohalahala hearing to continue LANAI CITY - A hearing by the state Board of Registration on the voter registration of Maui County Council Member Sol Kaho'ohalahala will continue Monday in Lanai City. The board will convene at 9 a.m. at Hale Kupuna O Lanai. It will continue a hearing that began May 26. The Board of Registration is reviewing an appeal by Lanai resident Michael "Phoenix" Dupree challenging Maui County Clerk Jeffrey Kuwada's approval of Kaho'ohalahala's registration to vote as a Lanai resident in 2009. Dupree has argued that Kaho'ohalahala doesn't meet residency requirements. ***** Veterans health hearing is Tuesday KAUNAKAKAI - Officials with the Veterans Administration Pacific Islands Health Care System will hold a town hall meeting beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell Pauole Community Center in Kaunakakai. The officials - including those from the VA regional office, the state Office of Veterans Affairs and the Maui Vet Center - will provide a brief update on current issues, followed by a question-and-answer session. The event's aim is to enhance communication among Molokai veterans, their beneficiaries, the VA and the Office of Veterans Affairs. |
