Thick or thin, the pizza is as authentic as it gets at Matteo's in Wailea. Families love it as the Italian food appeals to everyone, it's super casual for lunch and dinner, and the cost is easy on your pocketbook.
"Summer is here, the hotels are nice and busy and so we see a lot of families right now," says owner-chef Matteo Mistura, who hails from Sarzana in the Ligurian region of northern Italy.
Conveniently located right above the stop light near the Shops at Wailea on Wailea Ike Drive, Matteo's Pizzeria is situated in a lovely free-standing building. Views from the open-air dining room are of the Wailea Blue Golf Course.

Italian-born, owner-chef Matteo Mistura will wow your taste buds with the Ligurian pizza topped with shrimp, mascarpone cheese and Genovese pesto.
"The scenario here is pretty much the same as it's always been. But now I have a new sous chef, Joe Caccamo, from Chicago. He also worked at Capische."
Of course, Capische is one of the top restaurants on Maui. And for years, Matteo was the chef de cuisine at Ferraro's at the Four Seasons Resort Maui. So these guys know how to cook and it shows in the taste and the presentation.
This successful mom-and-pop operation also benefits from the help of Matteo's wife, Gianna Mistura, and their business partner, Mike O'Dwyer, who also owns nearby Mulligan's on the Blue Irish pub and restaurant.
"We haven't raised our prices, haven't touched it in two or three years," says Matteo. "We do everything from scratch. Our pastas are all homemade. So our sauces. We use a lot of local tomatoes, spinach and spring mix."
Even lasagne noodles are housemade and served with bechamel sauce and meat-and-tomato ragu. Other pasta favorites are braised lamb over short pasta and crema rosa of creamy pink vodka sauce. Pizzas range from the Cowboy to the Hawaiian.
