The Maui News

Four female artists - painter Beth Marcil, beader Rona Smith, potter Ayumi Ditamore and quilter Dianna Gundhauser - are showing new work in an exhibit titled "Mai ka 'Uhane i ka Kine ( From Spirit into Form)" at Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao.

The show opened Thursday and continues through Sept. 21. An opening reception begins at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The artists are exploring the source of inspiration in these works, which take them in new directions in their respective mediums, according to a gallery release.

Marcil explores color, texture, light and shadow, "weaving these elements into a unique visual tapestry that communicates the beauty and mystery of the world in which we live," the release continues.

Smith's beadwork balances meditation and mandala, while Ditamore's clay creations draw inspiration from her native country in new shapes and glazes. Gundhauser's quilts have been likened to paintings in terms of color and composition.
