KAHULUI - A Pukalani man was killed and two visitors were injured in a two-car crash Sunday near the airport.
Police reported that the cars collided nearly head-on about 11:26 a.m. on Haleakala Highway, between the intersection of Hana Highway and the entrance to the helicopter hangars.
A 2010 Dodge sedan was heading west and a 1996 Mercury sedan was heading east. The crash occurred in the eastbound lane. The driver of the Mercury, David K. Dutro, 75, was seriously injured and died at Maui Memorial Medical Center on Sunday afternoon.
The driver of the Dodge, a 27-year-old woman from Cambridge, Mass., and her passenger, a 31-year-old man, also from Cambridge, were injured. They were reported to be in stable condition at the hospital Sunday evening.
It was the 10th traffic fatality this year, compared with 11 at this time last year.
