Whale sanctuary offers training

KIHEI - The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is offering a three-week, interactive ocean-awareness training course.

The free sessions are scheduled for Oct. 11, 13, 18, 21, 25 and 27 at the sanctuary, 726 S. Kihei Road; and for Oct. 12, 14, 19, 20, 26 and 28 at the Lahaina Civic Center, 1840 Honoapiilani Highway.

Each workshop is designed to provide outreach tools and resources, and will cover the basics for community volunteers, tour boat operators, guides and owners, and others talking about ocean issues with visitors.

The workshops are open to the general public.

Topics include Polynesian voyaging canoe navigation and culture; ocean and weather forces affecting Maui; Maui reef ecology; humpback whale and marine mammal appreciation; marine mammal identification and reporting; and marine conservation involvement.
