HONOLULU (AP) - The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is accusing U.S. Rep. Charles Djou and the Hawaii Republican Party of violating its copyright of a photo of Democrat Colleen Hanabusa used in a TV attack ad.

The newspaper said in an article Tuesday that it owns the copyright of the 2004 photo, and that the original was darkened for the ad.

The photo was included in an ad called "The Season" that began airing Oct. 11.

Star-Advertiser Vice President and Editor Frank Bridgewater said the newspaper would have denied usage of the photo if it had been asked.

Republican Party Executive Director Dylan Nonaka said Tuesday the picture was in the public domain on the Internet, and there was no willful use of a copyrighted image.

Djou's campaign has referred questions to the state party.
