NIGHT OF COSTUMES, POETRY TO GET HEATED
Something wild and wicked this way comes. The Maui Erotica Slam Poetry & Costume Ball at 9:30 tonight at Casanova in Makawao will heat up as poets, spoken-word artists, emcees and actors will perform original, erotic performance poetry of three minutes or less in a competition for $100 in cash. Cover is $10. Props and costumes are allowed, and poets must sign up at the door by 9:30 p.m. to participate. Other features include a Dirty Dance Party with DJ Sweetbeats, visuals by Douglas DeBoer, Vamp Tramp Burlesque acts, late-night costume parades and more. 'BE HERE NOW' WITH RAM DASS IN HAIKU
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ram Dass' "Be Here Now" at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Studio Maui in Haiku. Music, meditation, contemplation, insights and prasad will highlight the event. Food and beverages by Monsoon Indian Restaurant, Coconut Bliss, Maui Kombucha and Sym Blue Ology will be offered during the celebration. In 1970, Ram Dass' "Be Here Now" became the counter-culture bible for thousands of young people seeking enlightenment. It was a bridge, written in colloquial language, from the psychedelic '60s to Eastern spirituality with more than 2 million copies sold.
