VITEC toasts to all manner of wine tasting and cooking classes this semester in Kahului

VITEC is the continuing education branch of University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului. This semester, there will be a slew of classes open to the public on wines as well as onnutrition and cooking.

The Healthy Cooking for Diabetes class will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on two Tuesdays, starting next week in the college's Laulima Building, room 108. Catherine Blake has devoted 30 years to natural wellness and her class includes two suppers. Cost is $59, plus $15 for materials.

World traveler and top restaurateur Horst Antosch will teach several one-time classes. First up will be Wine Tasting, and it will flow from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in Laulima room 106.

"If you enjoy wine and would like to enrich your knowledge, this fun-filled three hour crash course is for you!" says Antosch, who taught at the Cesar Ritz hotel colleges in Switzerland, Australia and the United States in his 40-year career. Cost is $59, plus $35 in materials.

Antosch will also be the teacher for the one-time class, Five-Star Finger Foods, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24. You'll be the hit of your cocktail parties without spending hours in the kitchen. Cost is $49 per person, plus $35 for materials.

Returning for another stellar repeat series of classes will be Alan Jahns, partner in JMD Beverages in Wailuku. He'll teach Wine 101: Increase Your Knowledge of Fine Wines, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for six Mondays starting Jan. 24. It will be held in Laulima, room 105.

Travel the world through an in-depth study and appreciation of expensive wines, brandies and ports. You will gain practical knowledge that will increase your expertise and earnings if you are in the restaurant and retail business. Of course, for both Jahns and Antosch's wine classes, you must be 21 and older to attend. Cost is $279, but you get to taste thousands of dollars in premium wines and brandies.

Another January VITEC class will be Home Entertaining That Will Impress Your Friends, a one-shot adventure to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in Laulima building room 106.

Antosch will once again step up to the plate to teach. He's catered to the likes of Paul Newman and Robert Redford and now he'll teach you about napkin folds, table linens, place settings, making a toast and pouring wines. You'll learn all the tricks of the trade. Cost is $49 per person, plus $35 for materials.
