Portuguese immigrants who came from the Azores and Madeira to Maui established St. Joseph parish in Ulumalu, Haiku, on June 29, 1862, a church release said.
They built a wooden church at the present cemetery site.
The Rev. Justin Schayk led construction of the third and existing church in 1911, with a tower added in 1927.
St. Joseph Church will commemorate the anniversary with spiritual retreats and activities starting with its annual Feast from April 29 to May 1.
The church also will mark the centennial of the existing church with a Mass and luau June 26.
With a "Remembering and Celebrating the Past With Fidelity and Gratitude" theme, St. Joseph will culminate its yearlong celebration at the annual Feast on May 4-6, 2012.
