Become immersed in the culture, people and heart of the Islands with Viewpoints Gallery's new exhibition Celebration of Hawai'i 2011. More than 50 of Hawaii's premier artists have been invited to create new work for the show, which will open Friday and continue through March 1. The opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday is free and open to the public.

Viewpoints' Makawao gallery will be transformed to showcase the collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, jewelry and photography. One of the highlights of the show will be a special display of Maui's best quilt-makers. Also, demonstrations and workshops on subjects related to Hawaiian culture will be offered.

Wertheim Contemporary will celebrate the grand opening of its new annex with the presentation of artists Andreas Nottebohm and Spar Street from 5 to 9 p.m. in Makawao. Wailuku's Maui Thing is launching a student art contest inspired by the Year of the Rabbit. All public elementary school students in kindergarten to 5th grade are invited to create original work that illustrates the Chinese New Year and its significance in our community. The artwork can incorporate any supplies, as long as it's 2-D and on an 8-by-11-inch paper. Include student's name, school's name, grade level, teacher's name and phone number of the teacher on the back, top left corner of each piece. There will be six divisions based on grades and two winners per division. First place winners will receive their choice of a free Maui Thing T-shirt and goodie bag. Second will receive a Maui Thing goodie bag. Each contestant will receive a small prize. Entries can be turned into Maui Thing, 7 N. Market St., during store hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.
