HOT OFF THE GRIDDLE . . . Gone is Dad's Donuts, a casualty because the owner spent all of his time campaigning for mayor. It's sad, because the desserts had such a following.

Now, Chris Hart has leased his little walk-up counter in his Hart's Corner building on the corner of Vineyard and Central in Wailuku to Cafe Central Catering & Drive In, which held its grand opening Friday.

The owners are husband and wife team Willie and Lorn Bumanglag.

"Willie's been cooking in the resorts for 20 years," says Lorn. "Here, he will be making a mixed blend of foods like plate lunches, salads and wraps."

Open Monday to Friday for lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. it offers only a few seats, so most people will order take-out. The couple can also do off-site catering for 100 people for $1,000 with entree, tossed salad, dressing, steamed white rice, stir-fried vegetables and dessert. Call 249-2693.

The new Shaka Shave Ice downstairs from Moose's in Lahaina is attracting tourists who want to cool off in West Maui's balmy climate. Fun flavors include the Tiger's Blood with cherry and coconut syrups and the Godzilla, roaring with tart berry flavors.

Since so many readers are noticing the construction in Olowalu, it's time to talk about what is targeted to open there, hopefully by June.

"As the new tenants of the former Chez Paul restaurant in Olowalu, we wanted to take a few moments to let you know about our plans for the space that's held so many memories for all of us over the years," says Michael Moore, partner in the parent company, Hoaloha Na Eha, which also owns and operates Old Lahaina Lu'au, Aloha Mixed Plate and Star Noodle in West Maui.

"Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop will feature casual family- style dining in a comfortable plantation-era atmosphere. Our menu will feature an assortment of hand-crafted sandwiches, pizzas, salads, daily specials and of course, sweet and savory pies. We anticipate our initial operating hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. While we continue to develop our menu, concept and decor, we very much look forward to being a part of the Olowalu community."

BITS AND PIECES . . . Save your tickets stubs to the made-on-Maui "Just Go With It" movie, starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler.

Much of it was filmed at the Grand Wailea, so the resort is offering "buy one entree, get one free at its oceanfront Bistro Molokini restaurant if you bring in your stubs now through March 31. . . Gannon's in Wailea also is continuing its promo for ticket stub holders of "buy one entree and get the second one free."

The Saturday Japanese buffet will return to Makena Beach & Golf Resort starting this weekend, and you will find everything from giant shrimp tempura to sake-steamed clams to pork katsu don.

The all-you-can-eat affair will be set up in the resort's Raku Japanese Restaurant each Saturday with seatings at 5:30, 6, 7:30 and 8 p.m.

Seafood lovers are diving into the new Raw Bar at Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea with gusto. The resort's open-air DUO sets the stage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in addition to its regular menu of prime steaks and seafood.

The raw selections vary from week to week depending on what Executive Chef Roger Stettler is able to get in. Ditto for the wine offerings, which are categorized in a fun way as "pink stuff," "white stuff" and "bubbly bubbles." All pair perfectly with the raw seafood.

Black Rock Steak & Seafood at Sheraton in Kaanapali is enticing Mauians with 50 percent off its fabulous food items through the month of March.

Next week, Dining Scene will cover foods to the served at the Sir Elton John concert at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. Bring your appetites (and your IDs, if you want to drink alcohol) as there will be numerous top Maui vendors selling signature items.
