WAILUKU - Maui motorists were rushing to top off gas tanks late Thursday night as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center upgraded its advisory to a tsunami warning at 9:31 p.m.

The tsunami generated by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake near the east coast of Japan was estimated to arrive at 2:59 a.m. today, the center said.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the center's advisory said. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

"The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive," it said.
