HONOLULU (AP) - The wife of Democratic Sen. Daniel K. Inouye was in Tokyo when an 8.9-magnitude earthquake shook Japan.
Irene Inouye said that she was with two other Hawaii residents as part of a Japanese-American leadership delegation Friday when they felt a sudden jolt.
''I was on an escalator and it was pretty strong when it struck,'' Inouye said.
Inouye called her husband as soon as the tremors ceased, to let him know she was safe.
Inouye said she did not see extensive damage. She said it was remarkable that buildings in Tokyo showed minimal damage. But she is concerned about the many fatalities.
