The Hawaii state chapter of the American Red Cross responded to families on Maui and Molokai whose homes were affected by the tsunami.
The worst damage was in Kamalo, Molokai, where homes were knocked off their foundations, said Maria Lutz of the American Red Cross.
"One was actually picked up off its foundation and thrown quite a ways," she said. "It took volunteers quite a while to find the house."
Lutz said the volunteers found it after hiking awhile. Overall, six homes were affected in the area.
All the residents evacuated, and there were no injuries, she said. "I think they all knew the risk."
The residences were between Milepost 10 and 15 on Kamehameha V Highway in East Molokai, she said.
"Some people are busy trying to rebuild," Lutz said. "Others have lost the contents of their homes. Some are without electricity, water and plumbing."
On Maui, a residence on Linekona Place in Wailuku sustained major damage, while another on the same road had minor damage, she said. Minor damage also was reported at a residence on Lower Waiehu Beach Road.
Homes with minor damage are still habitable, but substantial cleanup needs to be done, Lutz said. Eight more homes in Wailuku were affected by the tsunami, meaning water went in them, but it's possible to clean them without repairs.
Two homes were affected in Kihei, both on Welakahao Road, she said. And a home sustained minor damage on Stable Road in Spreckelsville, while seven others on that road were affected by the tsunami.
