The Maui News

In celebration of Prince Kuhio Day on Friday, Hula Grill Ka'anapali will offer all Hawaii residents, with valid state IDs, 25 percent off food all day long. Dine oceanfront as you listen to live entertainment from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., with local musicians Ernest Pua'a; Kawika Lum Ho; 1810; and Kawika, Roy and Tarvin.

"We appreciate all of our customers, but it's the ongoing support and aloha from our local residents that have really contributed to the success of Hula Grill over the years," says General Manager Orrin Cross. "The kamaaina discount is just our way of saying, 'mahalo.' "

The menu features imu-style barbeque ribs and fire-grilled shrimp and scallops as appetizers, fresh Hawaiian fish crusted in macadamia nuts or grilled on kiawe wood, and Hula Grill traditions such as kobacha-pumpkin ravioli and tarragon-roasted lobster tail as entrees.

At the Grand Taste Education event as part of the Maui County Agricultural Festival coming up April 2 in Waikapu at Maui Tropical Plantation, Hula Grill will be among 13 chefs dishing up farm-fresh samples.

"I'll be paired with WeFarm of Kapalua," says Scott McGill, the corporate chef for TS Restaurants, the umbrella company of Hula Grill. "We'll braise their collard greens in fresh coconut milk and Hana palm hearts. We'll also make bacon-taro French fries."

The taro will be run through a mandolin for a julienne match-stick shape, and the bacon will be the same thickness and size. They'll be a crisp and crunchy garnish on top of the braised collard greens.

McGill goes on to say that "this is the event's fourth year, and it's getting bigger and better. It's dialed in more and more for foodies and families."

Hula Grill will also host a "competition-style" event each year for qualifying students of the Maui Culinary Academy at the UH Maui College campus in Kahului. The first one will be from 2 to 4 p.m. April 12.

"It will be an appetizer contest," says McGill. "Whatever entry wins will be featured as a special at Hula Grill. Much of the proceeds from that item will then go to the student for his or her educational needs. The amount we plan to give them will be $3,000."

Hula Grill's beachside bistro is located oceanfront in Whalers Village in Kaanapali. For reservations, you may call 667-6636.
