WAIPAHU, Oahu - Five teams from the Valley Isle, including four Maui United Soccer Club squads, advanced to the regionals after their performances at the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association State Cup over the weekend at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
The Maui United '94 girls, '95 boys and '99 boys won their respective age divisions Sunday, while the Maui United '94 boys earned a wildcard spot. In addition, Maui Elite won the under-13 boys state title to also advance to the Far West Regional, set for June 20-26 in Boise, Idaho.
The five teams are the most Maui has ever sent to the regionals, according to longtime Maui United coach Fred Guzman.
The Maui United girls defeated Ka Oi Express 2-1 in the U-17 championship game. Amber-Lei Madriaga had a goal, and Maya Palaroan scored the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the match.
In the boys U-15 title game, Nick Lawrence scored two goals and Clayton Robinson had one as the Maui United '95 team defeated the Nike Rush 3-0.
The Maui United Red '99 boys got goals from Angelo Deloso-Flacco and Noa Harrisson in a 2-0 championship win over the Honolulu Bulls in the U-12 division.
In a game to determine a wildcard spot for regionals, the Maui United '94 team defeated Mililani 5-0. Maui United got two goals from Mattias Thompson and one each from Alika Ribao, Willy Harris and Richie Rivera.
