April 15, 2011
The Maui News

MAKENA - A Tenebrae service will be held at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday at historic Keawala'i Congregational Church. The ancient Tenebrae candlelight service began in the 8th century and "symbolizes the suffering and death of Christ and the darkness that filled the earth when Jesus was crucified," a church news release stated. The dramatic service will feature music by Na Leo Nahenahe adult choir.

On Easter Sunday, April 24, the annual Easter sunrise service will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on the church grounds in Makena. The theme is "O, How I Love Jesus."

New members of Keawala'i Congregational Church will be received into the church at the service.

Participants are invited to bring a single-stem flower or lei to be placed on the cross after the celebration of the Lord's Supper, or Eucharist.

Nonperishable food items will be collected for the Maui Food Bank.

Church seating for 800 people will be provided. Parking is available in the church's overflow parking lot and along the lower beach and upper highway.

Keawala'i Congregational Church is located at 5300 Makena Road. For directions, call 879-5557.
