WAILUKU - A man who left a courtroom last year after being ordered to remain so he could be arrested on a warrant was sentenced Tuesday to five years' probation on an escape charge.

George Hoopai, 42, of Wailuku, was given credit for 41 days he previously spent in jail.

He had pleaded no contest to abusing his wife, who reported being pushed by Hoopai on Sept. 12, as well as to to second-degree escape and resisting arrest.

After failing to show up for a court date earlier in the month, Hoopai appeared in 2nd Circuit Court for the abuse case Dec. 23.

He was ordered to stay in the courtroom to be arrested on a $20,000 bench warrant but left the courtroom, according to court records.

Minutes later, Hoopai was arrested nearby.

Hoopai was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to complete a domestic violence intervention program.

Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza imposed the sentence.
